Crowds lined up early in front of Smokies Park, eagerly awaiting the start of the 2112 Southern League season. On the mound was Rick Reckers for the visiting Jacksonville Suns and Jesse Clare for the hometown Tennessee Smokies. In a spirited contest, the Suns pulled out the win, defeating the Smokies by the score of 6-5. Especially impressive was Jesse Clare. Dave Ellis was the winner in relief. His record is now 1-0. The losing pitcher was Sergio Gaona.

Jacksonville used the timely hitting of Jesse DuPont to seize the win. The catcher stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the ninth inning to put the Suns on top, 5-3. It was his only hit in 5 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.

"I don't feel you win baseball games by working harder than the other team or 'wanting it more,'" DuPont told the Jacksonville Gazette. "You win just by scoring more runs."
