Tennessee picked up a win at Smokies Park, bumping off the Jacksonville Suns, 6-3. Pitcher Matt Whitlatch was a major reason the Smokies emerged victorious. Whitlatch, now 3-0, was the winner. In 7.1 innings, he gave up 8 hits, while striking out 8, walking 2, and allowing 3 runs. Jeremy Porras recorded the save for Tennessee, his 5th of the season.
Mike Lowery had a big 3-run home run for the Smokies in the bottom of the fifth inning. With Tennessee leading 2-0 and runners on 1st and 2nd, he got a fastball from 29-year old left-handed pitcher Steve Gallagher and swatted a home run to center. It was his 7th home run of the season, and more importantly, it put the Smokies ahead, 5-0.
"Today was a lot of fun," said Lowery.
Tennessee is 4th in the North Division with a record of 15-22.
