The St. Louis Cardinals, despite a fine performance by Minnesota pitcher Curt McMahon, grabbed a 3-2 win at Busch Stadium. McMahon allowed 1 run over 6.1 innings. Bobby Pekala picked up the win in relief. His record improves to 1-0. Roberto Aranda suffered the loss. St. Louis is now 1-2.

The decisive blow was delivered by Dave Smeal in the bottom of the ninth when he hit a 2-run double off 24-year old right-handed pitcher Roberto Aranda to win the game for St. Louis. The home crowd went nuts.

"This place was rockin'," said Smeal.
