The Tennessee Smokies picked up a win at The Ballpark at Jackson, knocking off the Jackson Generals, 5-1. Starting pitcher Matt Whitlatch played a key role in the triumph. Whitlatch, now 8-3, was the winner. In 7.1 innings, he gave up 6 hits, while striking out 7, walking 3, and allowing 1 run. With the win over Jackson, the Smokies improved to 41-52.

Miles Thrash dealt the Generals a blow in the top of the fifth. Batting with a runner on 2nd and Tennessee leading 2-1, Thrash, the 14th overall pick in the 2107 draft, hit a 2-2 changeup for a run-scoring single.

"Matt has got a slow heartbeat," said Tennessee manager Steve Schwab. "He doesn't panic or anything."
