Birmingham pitcher Corey Smith did his part in helping his team beat the Mississippi Braves, 7-0. The right-hander kept opposing batters from doing too much damage. Smith, the winner, moves to 9-5. He threw 7 innings of 4-hit ball, while fanning 5 and giving up 3 walks. Birmingham is now 77-52.

Ben Frey had a big 2-run double for the Barons in the bottom of the fourth inning. With Birmingham leading 1-0 and runners on 1st and 2nd, he got a fastball from 23-year old right-handed pitcher Danny Cantu and swatted a double to right-center. It was his 7th double of the season, and more importantly, it put the Barons ahead, 3-0.

"Corey was locating, throwing all of his pitches," said Birmingham manager John Ware. "He did a heck of a job."
