Cubs Pull Out Late-Game Win, 9-8
|
Miguel Gerena added some punch to the Chicago offense, helping them outmuscle the Philadelphia Phillies, 9-8. In the game, Gerena, who finished 2nd in the NL in batting average with .310 in 2110, was 4 for 5 with a home run, a double, and 2 singles. He drove in 5 runs and scored once. Chicago pitcher Jonathan Hager earned the win, hiking his record to 1-0. Jeremy Kowalewski suffered the loss. Chicago is now 2-5.
The game was still up for grabs in the bottom of the ninth. With no one out, Gerena hit a sinker from Jeremy Kowalewski for a run-scoring single. The Cubs, in dramatic fashion, had a walk-off win.
"I'm just out there trying to have as much fun as I can while I'm playing," Gerena told the Chicago Herald.
