Starting pitcher Matt Ortiz gave the Stockton Ports a rock-solid performance, helping his team defeat the Inland Empire 66ers, 2-1, at Banner Island Ballpark. Ortiz, the winner, moves to 3-1. He threw 6.2 innings of 3-hit ball, while fanning 9 and giving up no walks. Dan Berry earned his 1st save, after closing out the game.
With scoring opportunities rare, the Ports had to cash in when they had the chance. One such opportunity presented itself in the bottom of the fifth, when designated hitter Charlie Conrad hit a run-scoring single. The single came off Danny Rosado and made the score 2-0, Ports. Conrad went 1-4.
"Matt pounded the strike zone and made good pitches when he needed to," said Stockton manager Nick Mays.
With the loss, Inland Empire falls to 5-11.
