Mavericks Suffer 6-2 Setback
|
For the home crowd, it was a thrilling walk-off win.
The Nuts grabbed a win, 6-2, at John Thurman Field, overcoming a fine effort from High Desert pitcher Chris Gormley. Gormley went 6.1 innings and allowed no runs. Modesto reliever Jason McCaleb picked up the win to move to 1-0. David Nanney suffered the loss.
Modesto got a clutch hit from Jose Fuentez. The second baseman launched a grand slam home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to win the game. It was his only hit in 2 at-bats, but it was a kill shot.
"What a buzz," said Fuentez after it was over.
Modesto is now 17-12, High Desert 13-16.
