Stockton beat Bakersfield on the strength of starting pitcher Jason James's fine effort. The right-hander led his team to a win, 3-2. The last-place Ports bumped their record to 16-29.

Stockton went in front, 3-2, on Luke Swindle's 2nd home run of the season. The 3-run home run, which Swindle hit in the bottom of the eighth, left Bakersfield pitcher Gary Thompson visibly perturbed.

"Jason never lets off the gas," said Stockton manager Mark Zoss. "Good, bad, or ugly, he never gives in."
