In a tight tilt between the Modesto Nuts and the San Jose Giants, Tom Valko was the deciding factor. The Modesto left-hander spearheaded the 3-1 win. The second-place Nuts now have a win-loss record of 30-22.

Juan Alvarez aided the Modesto cause with a run-scoring walk in the bottom of the third. For the game, the first baseman went 1 for 3 with a walk.

"Tom answered the bell," said Modesto manager Steve Kamps.
