The Bakersfield Blaze had to overcome a fine effort from San Jose pitcher Brent Fyffe to win, 4-2, at San Jose Municipal Stadium. Fyffe went 6.2 innings and allowed 1 run. Jason Langan earned the win after being brought in from the bullpen. The left-hander allowed no runs on 2 hits in 1.1 innings. His record is now 8-8. The 'W' lifts Bakersfield's record to 60-66.

The game was at a stalemate until designated hitter Roberto Penaloza came to bat in the top of the ninth. Facing San Jose pitcher Ossie Cabrera, he hit a 1-0 fastball for a 2-run single. It was a game-changer, putting Bakersfield on top, 4-2.

"It was our day today," Penaloza told the Bakersfield Gazette. "But we've got to keep our nose to the grindstone."
