Cardinals Stumble, Lose to Cubs
The Chicago Cubs got a marvelous performance from pitcher Alfredo Cortez. The right-hander kept the St. Louis offense from ever getting much traction. The result was an impressive 9-2 Chicago victory at Wrigley Field. Getting the save was Jonathan Hager, his 1st. The win gives Chicago a record of 8-6.

Miguel Gerena had a big 2-run home run for the Cubs in the bottom of the fourth inning. With Chicago trailing 2-1 and a runner on 1st, he sized up a knuckle curve from 26-year old right-handed pitcher Juan Castillo and punished it. The result was his 4th home run of the season, which put the Cubs on top, 3-2.

"We'll need a much better effort, the next time out," said losing manager Leyland Thomas.
