The Oakland Athletics weathered an outstanding game by Houston designated hitter Willie Valiente to topple the Astros, 5-4. Valiente was 2-3 with a home run and a walk. Matt Ortiz picked up the win, improving his season record to 1-1. He struck out 2 in 6.2 innings. The win brings the Athletics to 13-9, a promising start as the team looks to return to the playoffs.

Oakland designated hitter Jacob Rowley contributed a timely at-bat in the top of the third. With two down, he hit a fastball to center field for a 2-run single. It was his 8th hit of the season and put the Athletics ahead, 5-3.

"Say want you want about this team, they play nine innings hard," said Oakland manager Jon Pearson.
