Wheaton Delivers Walk-Off Win for Pirates
|
The Pittsburgh Pirates took New York pitcher Miguel Montoya's best shot and still were able to claim a win at PNC Park. The final score had Pittsburgh getting past the Mets, 4-3. Montoya went 6 innings and allowed 2 runs, striking out 8. Willie Lopez, who led the NL in saves with 43 in 2106, was the winner in relief. His record is now 3-0. The losing pitcher was John Rood. The Mets fall to 7-16 and continue to sputter in the early going.
A defensive lapse proved costly in the contest. With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth, an error by the Mets allowed the Pirates to score the winning run.
New York manager Rodney Smith said he was "mildly disappointed" with the loss. "We had our opportunities, but we didn't take advantage of them," he said.
