San Francisco Bats Silenced by Bartz
Friday, July 31st , 2111
Jim Bartz of the Seattle Mariners was on top of his game.
The 29-year-old tantalized the San Francisco Giants with crisp curves and changeups, mixed in with just enough fastballs to keep the batters honest, shutting them out, 3-0.
"He had the changeup working," San Francisco manager Michel Alexandre Cauchon said in postgame comments. "You knew it was coming and you still grounded out -- and then he threw it even slower."
The Seattle hurler had 8 strikeouts, gave up 1 walk and surrendered 5 hits in his complete-game effort.
Bartz told reporters after the game that "keeping the ball down is the key to being successful in this league."
"If you don't do that, they'll make you pay," he said.
So far this season, Bartz has a 8-10 record, 21 starts, 121 innings, 117 strikeouts and a 4.54 ERA.
