Veterans Memorial Stadium featured a tense pitchers' duel.

In a low-scoring affair between the Cedar Rapids Kernels and the Kane County Cougars, pitcher Jose Nevares was the difference between victory and defeat. The Cedar Rapids left-hander earned accolades for his stellar performance in the 2-1 Kernels win. The winner was Nevares. He threw 5.1 innings of 3-hit ball. The loser was Mike Newman.

Jaden Haynes had a big solo home run for the Kernels in the bottom of the fourth inning. With Cedar Rapids leading 1-0 and the bases empty, he sized up a changeup from 19-year old right-handed pitcher Mike Newman and punished it. The result was his 7th home run of the season, which put the Kernels on top, 2-0.

"The want-to is there for our guys," said Kane County manager Robby Bilodeau. "We'll get this thing turned around."

The slumping Cougars have dropped 9 in a row.
