The Whitecaps grabbed a win, 6-4, at Four Winds Field at Coveleski Stadium, overcoming a fine effort from South Bend pitcher Steve Gbur. Gbur went 6.1 innings and allowed 2 runs. Jon Ballantine, who is tied for 10th in the MID in holds with 5, was the winner in relief. His record is now 3-0. The losing pitcher was Rich Urbina. With the win, the Whitecaps improved to 75-52.

West Michigan used the timely hitting of Steve Schurman to capture the win. The second baseman stroked a 2-run double in the top of the eighth inning to put the Whitecaps on top, 6-3. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but he made it count.

"It's nice to step up when your team needs you," said Schurman.
