South Bend beat Great Lakes on the strength of starting pitcher Steve Gbur's fine effort. The right-hander led his team to a win, 4-3. The winner was Gbur. He threw 7.1 innings of 6-hit ball. The loser was Ted Spann. Rich Urbina recorded the save. In save chances, he's now 13 for 18.

The Cubs got a big at-bat from designated hitter Alex Torres. For the game, Torres went 1 for 4 with a triple. In the top of the third, with a runner on 2nd, he stroked a run-scoring triple. His 2nd triple of the season gave South Bend a 1-0 lead.

"Steve is tough to beat when he's hitting his spots," said South Bend manager Roy Ofstad.
