South Bend got a big-time effort from pitcher Bill Burroughs, but it wasn't enough to keep the Great Lakes Loons from winning the game, 7-2. Burroughs threw 7.0 innings of 5-hit ball for the losing team. Bill DeFiore picked up the win in relief, improving his record to 5-2. Jim Unknown was tagged with the loss. The Loons now have a mark of 87-46.

Great Lakes relied on the bat of Joe Matthews to get the win. The third baseman ripped a 2-run home run in the top of the eighth inning to put the Loons ahead, 3-1. For the game, Matthews had 1 double and 1 home run in 4 at-bats.

"We cashed in when we had the chance," said Great Lakes manager Daniel Tolano.
