Hutchens Excels, But Shorebirds Win
|
Crowds lined up early in front of First Energy Park, eagerly awaiting the start of the 2111 South Atlantic League season. On the mound was Josh Eliason for the visiting Delmarva Shorebirds and Greg Dahlgren for the hometown Lakewood BlueClaws. In a spirited contest, the Shorebirds pulled out the win, defeating the BlueClaws by the score of 5-4. Especially impressive was Joel Hutchens. The winning pitcher was Josh Eliason. He tossed 109 pitches over 7 innings, allowing 1 run on 4 hits. Chris LeMarr recorded his 1st save for Delmarva.
It could have been a different outcome for Delmarva, had it not been for Evan Ervin, the 25-year old shortstop . Ervin contributed a run-scoring single in the top of the seventh inning to put Delmarva up, 3-1.
"It was a solid team effort," said Ervin after the game.
