The Lakewood BlueClaws and Charleston RiverDogs obliged fans hoping for an exciting game.

Thanks in large part to catcher John Rutherford, the Lakewood BlueClaws beat the Charleston RiverDogs, 5-4. Rutherford was 2 for 4 with a home run. He scored 2 times and drove in 2. Jon Espinoza, the winner, goes to 1-0. He allowed 4 runs on 7 hits, with 1 walk and 4 strikeouts over 7 innings.

Rutherford had a game-changing home run in the bottom of the seventh. On a 2-2 fastball from Tony Marti, he banged a 2-run home run to center, giving the BlueClaws a 5-3 lead. It was the 1st home run of the year for Rutherford.

Lakewood manager Steve Reinke called it "a darn good win."

Charleston, at 3-12, has had a dismal start to the season.
