Hickory Crawdads starter Mike Smith was in the groove. He led his team to a win over the Columbia Fireflies, 5-2. The loss drops Columbia to 8-9.

Hickory used a well-timed hit by Chris Gross to capture the win. The second baseman socked a bases-clearing double in the top of the first inning to put the Crawdads ahead, 4-0. Though it was his only hit in 4 at-bats, it was important.

"I thought we played some darn good baseball," said Crawdads manager Jordan Castro.
