Hurler Michael Hess gave the Lexington Legends a solid start. The native of Standish, Maine helped his team defeat the Charleston RiverDogs, 3-1, at Whitaker Bank Ballpark. In 7 innings, Hess surrendered 4 hits, while striking out 5 and walking 2. He allowed 1 run. Theron Koulpasis closed it out for his 9th save.
The Legends got a big at-bat from pinch hitter Melvin Pereira. For the game, Pereira went 1 for 1 with a home run. He drove in 2 runs and scored once. In the bottom of the sixth, with a runner on 1st, he stroked a 2-run home run. His 1st home run of the season gave Lexington a 2-1 lead.
"Michael pitched like a champ," said Lexington manager Danny Ortiz.
The RiverDogs fall to 10-13 and continue their lackluster start to the 2109 season.
