The Columbia Fireflies beat the Charleston RiverDogs, 5-2. Columbia pitcher and San Leandro, California, native Mike Newman led the way. Newman, now 3-1, was the winner. In 7 innings, he gave up 6 hits, while striking out 8, walking 0, and allowing 2 runs. Matt Perez earned the save, his 2nd, for the Fireflies.

Columbia used a well-timed hit by Jesse Denger to capture the win. The shortstop socked a 2-run double in the top of the first inning to put the Fireflies ahead, 3-0. Though it was his only hit in 4 at-bats, it was important.

"Whenever I help the team," said Denger, "it sort of justifies my place on the roster."

Columbia bumps their record to 16-14 with the win.
