Win Goes to GreenJackets in Tight Contest
|
Columbia wasted an exceptional performance by pitcher Steve Voltz, falling to the Augusta GreenJackets, 4-1. Voltz threw 7.0 innings of 4-hit ball for the losing team. Augusta reliever Brian Schultz was the winner. His record is now 1-2. Bill Comrie took the loss. The 4th-place GreenJackets bumped their record to 24-31.
Augusta used a timely hit from John Lack to get the win. The pinch hitter stroked a run-scoring double in the top of the ninth inning to put the GreenJackets ahead, 2-1. It was his only hit in 1 at-bat, but it made an impact.
"That's how you're going to be successful," said GreenJackets manager Bill Mercado. "It starts with pitching and it will always be pitching."
