Paniagua Leads Tourists to Win
|
Led by Johnny Paniagua, the Asheville Tourists defeated the Greenville Drive, 6-4. Paniagua, a native of Whitinsville, Massachusetts, went 2 for 4 with 2 home runs and a walk, while adding 5 RBI and scoring twice for the Tourists. Asheville reliever Jay Kelleher got the win, raising his record to 5-1. Jake Schafer was tagged with the loss. Asheville has won 7 straight, while Greenville has lost 7 in a row.
Who knows how it would've ended, had it not been for Santiago Velez? The 23-year old shortstop Velez stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the eighth inning to put Asheville up, 5-4. For the game, he was 2 for 4, including 1 double and 1 single.
"We certainly don't want to get used to losing," said losing manager Joey Many.
