Starting pitcher Mike Newman gave the Columbia Fireflies a rock-solid performance, helping his team defeat the Charleston RiverDogs, 3-2, at Spirit Communications Park. Jesus Alvarado snagged the win in relief. He goes to 4-1 on the season. Marcos Samaniego suffered the loss. Columbia is 40-32 and Charleston, with the loss, 23-49.

The climactic moment came in the bottom of the tenth for Columbia. That's when 25-year old right fielder John Lakes hit a 2-run home run off Marcos Samaniego to win the game. The home crowd erupted in celebration.

Newman called the win a test of his team's "mettle."
