Streaking Braves Win Another One, 4-2
|
The Rome Braves defeated the Charleston RiverDogs, 4-2, in South Atlantic League action at State Mutual Stadium. Rome pitcher Doug Mertz had a standout performance. Mertz got the win, improving to 1-0. He gave up 1 hit and walked 1 over 5.1 innings. He allowed no runs. Rome is now 40-35.
Mike Van Loenen, the 11th overall pick in the 2108 draft, chipped in a solo home run for Rome in the bottom of the fifth. For the game, the shortstop had 3 hits in 4 at-bats with 1 home run, 2 singles, 1 run scored, and 2 RBI.
"Good pitching stops good hitting," said Mertz. "And vice-versa."
