The Hickory Crawdads wanted a good start from Gary Ayala -- and he delivered one. The result was a 3-0 Hickory win over the Kannapolis Intimidators at CMC-NorthEast Stadium. The Crawdads improved their record to 45-43 by beating Kannapolis.

Hickory used the bat of Mike Wells to get the win. The right fielder hit a fastball from Freddie Watrous out of the park for a 3-run home run. The blast came in the top of the third inning and put the Crawdads on top, 3-0. It was Wells's lone hit, but it left a mark.

Said Hickory manager Jordan Castro: "Gary came into the game mentally strong. He dominated."
