Columbia Pins 6-1 Loss on Drive
|
The Columbia Fireflies got a marvelous performance from pitcher Dave Hoffman. The right-hander kept the Greenville offense from ever getting much traction. The result was an impressive 6-1 Columbia victory at Fluor Field at the West End. Hoffman, now 9-3, was the winner. In 6.1 innings, he gave up 3 hits, while striking out 6, walking 2, and allowing no runs. Columbia, now 45-47, holds down third place in the Southern Division.
It could have been a different outcome for Columbia, had it not been for Dave Bumpus, the 22-year old center fielder . Bumpus contributed a run-scoring single in the top of the fifth inning to put Columbia up, 2-0.
Bumpus attributed the win to his team's "grittiness."
