Lakewood got a terrific performance from pitcher D.J. Rost, but it wasn't enough to beat the Columbia Fireflies. Columbia won the Spirit Communications Park contest, 2-1. Rost threw 8.0 innings of 6-hit ball for the losing team. Pat Sawtell was the winning pitcher. Over 5.2 innings, he allowed no runs on 6 hits, with no walks and 5 strikeouts. Matt Long, summoned from the bullpen, notched his 12th save.

Chad Ammerman made an early impact for Columbia when he stroked his 8th home run of the season. The solo home run, which came with one out in the bottom of the first, put the Fireflies on top, 2-0.

"Can't say enough about our pitching," said Ammerman.

At 72-42, Columbia is in second place in the Southern Division.
