Fans were not deterred by the threat of rain. They came to see their hometown Lexington Legends take on the Rome Braves.

The Lexington Legends could not turn a fine performance from pitcher Steve Barney into a win. Instead, the Rome Braves prevailed, 7-2. Barney threw 6.1 innings of shutout ball. Doug Mertz, the winner, improved to 8-5. He held the Legends to 2 runs on 3 hits over 7 innings, while striking out 4 and walking 3.

Dave Duell came through with a big-time hit for Rome. The pinch hitter smacked a 2-run home run in the top of the seventh inning to give his team the lead, 2-0. It was his only hit, but it was clutch.

"You can never predict what'll happen," Duell said. "That's why you play the game."

Rome is now 60-56.
