The South Bend Cubs got a superb performance from pitcher Matt Helsen, but the Dayton Dragons still won the game, 5-3. Helsen threw 5.0 innings of 4-hit ball. Ruben Guzman earned the save for Dayton, his 5th. Dayton is now 62-73.

Dayton took a 5-2 lead on Rich Holland's 25th double of the season. The bases-clearing double, which Holland hit in the bottom of the seventh, left South Bend pitcher Jim Gamblin shaking his head.

"It was our day today," Holland told the Dayton Bulletin. "But we've got to keep our nose to the grindstone."
