The Tri-City ValleyCats got a magnificent performance from pitcher Sam Melton, who muffled the Mahoning Valley offense en route to a tight, 3-0 ValleyCats win at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium. In 5 innings, Melton surrendered 3 hits, while striking out 4 and walking 3. He allowed no runs. Greg Little recorded the save for Tri-City, his 1st of the season.
Jake Brockelman had a big solo home run for the ValleyCats in the bottom of the third inning. With Tri-City leading 1-0 and the bases empty, he sized up a fastball from 19-year old left-handed pitcher Chris Walker and punished it. The result was his 1st home run of the season, which put the ValleyCats on top, 2-0.
"Sam did what Sam does," said Tri-City manager Pat Bredahl.
Mahoning Valley, at 10-25, has lost 4 straight.
