Black Bears Handle Cyclones, Grab 1-0 Win
|
West Virginia pitcher Mark Brooks had a large part in his team subduing the Brooklyn Cyclones, 1-0. The opposition could never mount much of a rally against the left-hander. Brooks got the win, improving to 2-2. He gave up 4 hits and walked 0 over 6.1 innings. He allowed no runs. Shawn McMindes wrapped it up, recording his 3rd save.
Bubba Kirby, who is tied for 5th in the NYP in total bases with 68, took Brooklyn hurler Antonio Loza deep in the bottom of the third. His solo home run put the Black Bears on top, 1-0. In all, Kirby had 1 single in addition to the home run, while going 2 for 4.
"We didn't score," said losing manager Kevin Stark. "That was the problem."
With the win, West Virginia goes to 19-19, while the Cyclones fall to 14-24.
