The West Virginia Black Bears were almost helpless in their 6-0 loss to the State College Spikes and hurler Joe Lauver. Lauver kept the Black Bears confused all game, spinning a 7-hit shutout.

"Tip your hat to Lauver," West Virginia manager Ken Dugles said in a postgame interview. "He kept us off balance all night."

The 23-year-old right-hander had 4 walks and 8 strikeouts in a strong performance.

"It just happened to be one of those games where even when I made mistakes, they either fouled them off or someone would make a fine defensive play," Lauver said. "It was just one of those games that things went my way."

In 11 starts this year, Lauver has recorded a 7-3 record and a 1.76 ERA.
