Russell Diethrick Park was the site of a competitive game between the Mahoning Valley Scrappers and West Virginia Black Bears.

The West Virginia Black Bears defeated the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, 3-1, in New York-Penn League action at Russell Diethrick Park. West Virginia pitcher Israel Gonzalez had a standout performance. Dave Stearns earned his 7th save, after closing out the game.

The Scrappers had been locked in a 0-0 tie with the Black Bears going into the bottom of the fourth inning. That changed quickly when the 20-year old second baseman Dennis Gustafson came to the plate. Gustafson hit a run-scoring triple on a 0-2 fastball from Mahoning Valley hurler Miguel Rivera. It was Gustafson's 1st triple of the year.

Said Mahoning Valley manager Ramiro Tobar: "We weren't able to do much."

With the victory, the Black Bears record stands at 28-31.
