Buckingham Hittin' on All Cylinders
|
Chris Buckingham was jubilant as the Pittsburgh (GCL) Pirates left the field with a win, 14-5, over the New York N (GCL) Mets. He had every right to be.
The 18-year-old shortstop hit for the cycle at Pirate City Complex, had a 4-for-4 game and added 4 RBI and 3 runs to boot.
"It's too bad I can't do that every day," Buckingham said with a smile to reporters after the game. "It would do wonders for my batting average."
Pittsburgh (GCL) manager Vinny Romo was "proud" of the shortstop's feat, but was not expecting it to happen.
"Cycles are tough because triples are tough," the skipper said. "As soon as the ball left the bat on that triple, guys were jumping off the bench for him. Honestly, I wasn't sure he was going to be able to leg it out."
Chris Buckingham hit a two-run home run off Ernesto Balderas in the 1st, hit a sac fly in the 2nd, doubled in the 4th, tripled in the 6th and hit an RBI single in the 7th.
Thus far this season in 30 games, Buckingham is batting .222 with 4 home runs, 12 RBIs and 12 runs scored. He has 22 hits in 99 at-bats.
