Athletics Clip Rangers, 4-3
|
The Oakland (Rk+) Athletics topped the Texas (Rk+) Rangers by the score of 4-3, with the biggest share of the credit going to first baseman Bobby Hughes. Hughes went 3-5 with 3 singles, while adding 2 RBI for the Athletics on the day. The winner was Oakland (Rk+) reliever Steven Gooch, now 1-1. The loser was Jon Gonzalez. The second-place Athletics lifted their record to 30-41.
Benito Nieto, the 21-year old center fielder , had a direct impact on the outcome. Nieto contributed a run-scoring sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth inning to put Oakland (Rk+) up, 4-0.
In comments to the Oakland (Rk+) Herald, Hughes admitted that he doesn't always push himself. "But the results," he said, "speak for themselves."
