Tigers Down Nationals, 5-2
|
The Portland Tigers withstood a fine game by Washington (Rk+) center fielder B.J. Nilsson at Swine Ballpark, to upend the Nationals, 5-2. Nilsson went 3 for 4 with a home run and 2 singles. He drove in 2 runs and scored once. Josh Bindus, who is tied for 7th in the PIO in innings pitched with 73.1, was the winner. He's now 3-4. The loser was Pat Nelson. Earning his 5th save for Portland was Armando Sapien.
Gabe Schomber had a big 2-run home run for the Tigers in the top of the third inning. With Portland leading 1-0 and a runner on 1st, he sized up a cutter from Pat Nelson, who is tied for 8th in the PIO in wins with 6, and punished it. The result was his 3rd home run of the season, which put the Tigers on top, 3-0.
"Nice to be on top of the heap," said Tigers manager Bill Aguilar.
Portland now sports a record of 46-26.
