Eager fans turned out for a matchup between the Oakland (Rk+) Athletics and Chicago (Rk+) Cubs.

In a low-scoring affair between the Oakland (Rk+) Athletics and the Chicago (Rk+) Cubs, pitcher Alex Valladares was the difference between victory and defeat. The Oakland (Rk+) right-hander earned kudos in the 3-0 Athletics win. Alex Salcido, now 2-0, picked up the win in relief. He allowed no runs on no hits in 2 innings.

Had Robert Lopez not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 3rd, Lopez hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 1-0, in favor of the Athletics.

"We were trying to do a difficult thing -- winning a game without scoring," said Chicago (Rk+) manager Jose Agramonte. "That's not going to work out."

Oakland (Rk+), at 23-53, holds down third place in the West.
