Barons Clip Biscuits 2-1 in R1 Contest
|
The Birmingham Barons faced a challenging opponent in Montgomery Biscuits right-hander Willie Portugal, but did just enough to squeak out a 2-1 win in Game 3 of the Round 1 today. Birmingham now leads 2-1 in the best-of-5 series. The Barons won despite the Biscuits getting an excellent start from starter Portugal, who allowed 2 runs and scattered 6 hits over 7.1 innings.
In the bottom of the first inning, the Barons grabbed the lead when Nate Jennings rapped a two-out home run. Birmingham was trailing 1-0, when Jennings hit a 2-run home run off Willie Portugal to put his team in front, 2-1.
"There was a kid in the stands with a sign that said 'Birmingham Barons (probably) 2096 Round 2 Champions'," Jennings told reporters after the game. "I told him, 'Premature, but I like the confidence.'"
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Regions Field in Birmingham.
