The rookie looked like he belonged out there.

The Charlotte Stone Crabs sent 22-year-old right-hander Eddie Melendez to the mound today for a high-pressure playoff start and he repaid their confidence, quieting the St. Lucie Mets on a day where the Stone Crabs struggled to produce runs of their own. In the end, Charlotte cobbled together enough to take the 2-1 decision. The win gave Charlotte a 1-0 lead in the best-of-5 Round 1.

Melendez delivered a quality start for Charlotte. The 6' 2" right-hander allowed 1 earned run on 4 hits over 7 innings of work.

"The competition leap this year was tough to adjust to and I feel like there has been another jump in the playoffs," said Melendez, a rookie this season. "You're only playing the best now and everyone has time to rest and prepare for you."

The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Tradition Field in Port St. Lucie.
