Their bats were silent and Winston-Salem had a rookie on the mound. No problem.

On a day when the Dash struggled to string together much offense, the club got a big boost from 23-year-old starter Luis Fernandez. The left-hander quieted the Myrtle Beach Pelicans at BB&T Ballpark to help Winston-Salem take the 3-1 decision and seize a 1-0 advantage in the best-of-5 Round 1.

Fernandez was in the zone, shutting down Myrtle Beach hitters over 7 innings. Fernandez, who threw 89 pitches, allowed no runs on 4 hits. He also tallied 10 punchouts.

Pelicans manager Frank Ricker did not take questions after the game, telling assembled reporters that he would hold a press conference "if and when we win the Round 2."
