The performance of Joel Blanchard proved critical in helping West Virginia beat Mahoning Valley, 3-1, in 10 innings. The Black Bears third baseman went 4 for 5 with 2 doubles and 2 singles. Barry Nelson snagged the win in relief. The right-hander allowed 1 run on 2 hits over 2 innings. He's now 1-0 on the season. West Virginia has now won 4 in a row.

Blanchard had an important at-bat with the bases empty in the top of the sixth, when he hit a double. The Black Bears went on to win.
