Aberdeen Extends Series Lead in Low-Scoring Affair
|
When the games really matter, the Aberdeen Ironbirds put on their best show, beating the Mahoning Valley Scrappers by a final score of 2-1. Anthony Furtado threw 5.2 innings allowing 1 run. Aberdeen now leads Mahoning Valley 2-0 in the best-of-5 affair.
Batting in the bottom of the 11th, 23-year old shortstop Wade Riegel had a real shot to win the game. Mahoning Valley pitcher Amari Worrell was determined not to let it happen. But with two outs, Riegel hit a run-scoring single. The Ironbirds had a walk-off triumph.
"Bottom line," said Mahoning Valley skipper Ramiro Tobar, "we didn't play well enough to win."
Game 3 is scheduled for Tuesday at Eastwood Field in Niles.
