Helena Brewers manager Zaire Charles knew it was a gamble to give the start to a rookie. It was a good gamble to take.

Pitching in front of a hostile crowd, 19-year-old right-hander Doug Loughlin silenced the host Seattle (Rk+) Mariners at Ballpark of Sammamish today. The Brewers shut out the Mariners by a final score of 3-0, to give the Brewers a 1-0 advantage in the best-of-5 Round 1.

In the top of the fifth, Helena third baseman Corey Sullivan had a productive at-bat. With the bases loaded and two out, Sullivan stroked a 2-run single to right. It made the score 2-0, Helena. For the game, he went 2-4 with 2 singles and a walk, while adding 2 RBI.

"At least it was over quickly," Mariners manager Christopher Ervin said. "We'll just have to try our luck again."

The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Ballpark of Sammamish in Sammamish.
