Fernandez Excels, Lynchburg Wins Round 1 Game 1
|
Lynchburg Hillcats manager Diego Perez knew it was a gamble to give the start to rookie Roberto Fernandez. It was a good gamble to take.
Pitching in front of a supportive hometown crowd, the 23-year-old right-hander silenced the visiting Wilmington Blue Rocks at Ed Smith Stadium. The Hillcats shut out the Blue Rocks by a final score of 11-0, to give the Hillcats a 1-0 advantage in the best-of-5 Round 1.
Fernandez, who was born in Los RĂos, Dominican Republic, threw 124 pitches over 8.2 innings, while allowing no runs.
"What a debacle," groaned Wilmington manager Bobby Clontz in postgame remarks.
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Ed Smith Stadium in Lynchburg.
