Great Falls Voyagers manager Harry Andreotta knew it was a gamble to give the start to a rookie. It was a good gamble to take.

Pitching in front of a hostile crowd, 20-year-old left-hander Carlos Melena silenced the host Texas (Rk+) Rangers at Black Diamonds Ballpark. The Voyagers shut out the Rangers by a final score of 1-0, to give the Voyagers a 1-0 advantage in the best-of-5 Round 1.

Melena attributed the win to his team's "focus and intensity."
