Vancouver Takes Round 1 Game 1, Smedley Stars
|
Vancouver Canadians manager Chris Jeffreys knew it was a gamble to give the start to rookie Jesse Smedley. It was a good gamble to take.
Pitching in front of a supportive hometown crowd, the 23-year-old right-hander silenced the visiting Minnesota (SS-A) Twins at Nat Bailey Stadium. The Canadians shut out the Twins by a final score of 6-0, to give the Canadians a 1-0 advantage in the best-of-5 Round 1.
Micah Smith contributed to the Vancouver win with a 2-run single in the bottom of the fourth. For the game, the first baseman had 2 hits in 4 at-bats with 1 home run, 1 single, 1 run scored, and 3 runs batted in.
"I made some pitches when I had to," said Smedley.
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Nat Bailey Stadium in Vancouver.
